6th Treasure - [Written]

[It'd happened again. Thanks to an experimental Shift, Patty had once again found herself missing most of her memories. Important memories. She'd forgotten who she was and, more importantly, she'd forgotten her friends. The ones who'd stood by her during her darkest hours. Now that the Shift's passed, she feels ashamed of herself and the house seems even emptier than it already did. Certain words keep drifting back to the surface.

"I was worried you would find yourself all alone without your memories, but you found good friends, Aifread."

Friends... Friends in whom she can confide. There's only one of those she can turn to right now.]

Do you have time this afternoon? You could help me build a treehouse. I found the perfect tree. [She pauses her writing for a moment, thinking. Then she jots down one last sentence.] And I think we should talk.

Treehouses exist in other worlds too, right? So tell me, what do you think makes the perfect treehouse? What does it need? What doesn't it need? What kind of wood makes the sturdiest boards? Rope swing, tire swing or normal swing?

Now now, where's your thirst for adventure? Where's your spirit? You have to challenge yourself sometimes, ya know! The fun part about getting dizzy is trying to walk in a straight line without stumbling.

I never said I didn't like adventure, I just don't like feeling sick. Can't I challenge myself in ways that don't involve wanting to throw up?

If you do it just right, you won't want to throw up. Buuut... I guess there are other challenges out there. Have you ever tried to catch a Tolbyccian Loach with a simple wooden fishing rod? Slippery bugger, that one. Took me three whole weeks net one and that was a new record, ya know!

A... what? That's some kind of fish, right? I don't know what it's like, but I'm pretty good at fishing. I bet I could catch one of those no problem.

[Says the kid who needed help to haul in a fish, but shhhh.]

Oh yeah? Tall tales for a kid with no proof! Let's see you catch a big fish right here in Luceti!

Okay, then I will! I've caught plenty of them in the lakes already. Catching one more won't be that hard.

Consider this your latest challenge, kid! Catch a fish as big as can be! ...And no cheating by getting one from the store! I wanna see it alive and wriggling in a huge bucket, ya know.

You're on! I'll catch a fish so big it won't even fit into a bucket.

[They've gotta have fish that big in the lakes, right?]

All right, I'll bring it there when I catch it.

[Which will be easier said than done, not that Emil knows this.]

Then, I'll wish you good l- [She breaks off abruptly, then gives a soft, thoughtful 'hum'.]

Hang on, weren't we talking about treehouses? This conversation was blown off course faster than a dinghy in a typhoon. For shame, distracting an innocent maiden like that.

[Yeah, because she was totally not to blame for the topic derailment in any way.]

What? Hey, wait, that wasn't my fault! You were the one who brought up fishing in the first place when I said I wanted to challenge myself without getting sick.

[For once it really wasn't his fault, and he is not going to give in!]

But you're the one who started talking about getting sick, ya know!

Because you asked about the upsides of a tire swing!

You're going to put in a secret trapdoor, right? It can't be the best treehouse without one of those.

A secret trapdoor? A-aah, of course I was planning that! [No she wasn't.]

I've just gotta figure out if it goes in the floor or in the walls.

Wouldn't the floor make a lot more sense than trying to climb out through the wall? If you put it in the wall, it would just be like another door, and that wouldn't be very secret at all. The whole point of a secret trapdoor is so that you can slip in and out without anyone noticing.

No no no. Everyone's gonna see if you come crawling up out of the floorboards, ya know. It's a lot more stealthy if you suddenly appear by the wall behind someone!

How is that more stealthy than coming up through the floor? You could always hide a trapdoor in the floor behind a chair or something so that no one could see you using it.
